Hello series 1

Is the g/box beyond redemption?  may be possible to re-do the box if it is not too serious ?

Maybe something simple ie broken tooth or worn selectors?

Ask rotavator_man, he may have a spare box

most of the gear box is fine, unfortunatley where the diff lock shaft goes through the casing is badly worn.

hi there

i think the part that you are referring to is part number 109 for the mk5 gem ?
and is the differential lock selector ,( fork on shaft to drag it through the the largest gear  the "bull gear " ) and engage hub gear, i can look to see if i have one  ?

even thought this might be worn it is worth taking of the rod that engage it to see if you can adjust the length of the of the diff lock shaft , its is a chunky  washer with tab on it called the trunnion it is  held on with a lock nut that can be wound in  out.

is it a runner , because it is better to sort out the engine as these can be expensive to over haul ,as gear box is not so serious ,i only ask as it looks like it is "dead " as it is ferried around on the fork lift !!

hope you sort the mk5 out all the best

Hi it actually runs very well and now that ive had the injector overhauled all the smoke has stoped as well, it looks like the casing around the shaft is badly worn, and this also allows oil to come out, as i want to use this one commercaily i want to make sure it is all sorted out, when running the shaft moves up and down in time to the engine and the the reverse gear idler also spins which has led to wear here as well, apart from some wear in the gear selector shaft bushes which ive obtained a new pair for, all the internals are excellent with very little wear being evident on the cogs.
It was only on the forklift because i had popped the side off the box to investigate its reluctance to go into 3rd gear. A gearbox casing and difflock shaft would probably do.

Probabably a long shot but does any one have a starter handle clip that fits on to the bell housing, also ive been told that you should start these with the proper handle rather than the side handle does anyone know why, will it do any harm?

heres  a front view, note the squashed air filter, i just bought a new replacement from hatz, their words" at  a specailly reduced price to get rid of it as it was the last one left and they wanted it off their system at 120 + carriage". Still it was better than their price of 370 for a new injector, i had the old one reconditioned for 25.

it looks identical to one l used many years ago when l worked in a garden centre..we used it for mixing up potting compost for shrubs/trees (big heap rotovated through) and a small amount of landscaping. He still has it but wont part with it even though he will be 70 next year...and as you know starting these with a handle is very physical..my only hope is he gets a heart attack starting it some morning and it finds its way to auction at a clearance sale!!!!!

My personal view is that this probably was the best engine ever fitted to a gem, i know a lot like the old bj or jap engines for their wine, but after using most versions i find this is the best to use.A lovely torquey engine that sounds fantastic espcailly when ticking over and will run all day on a few pence worth of red diesel. I'm guesing its not old enough for a lot of people to consider it vintage but its older than me and after tuesday i feel old!
