A mate of mine's father is a bit of an Antarctica "buff",
a recipient of the Polar medal ..etc..
We were talking about Expeditions down there and I
raised the subject of the Ransomes MG2 being used.
He has no knowledge of pre-40s expeditions using
any Ransomes kit, which was when I thought it
might have been down there, so I'm guessing they
were used in the late 30s ..... ????
I'm sure I have seen a photo somewhere of one in
the snow (maybe on here) and a note that of the two
that got sent, one ended up down a crevasse ....
This chap has access to archives we could only dream
of (believe me, I knew what he did for a living before
he semi-retired) , so if any of yous can help with dates
or maybe an expedition name .... then we can get the
ball rolling on getting this info out in to the public domain.
I have Googled it and came up with no really good hits,
but I might have missed a link ...... ???
Can anyone remember seeing a photo on here ... must
have been at least a year ago ....... ???

I think I might have posted it.
One of the brochures I have shows an MG crawler with front blade in the snow.
If I cant find it on here I'll scan it again.

Looks like an MG6 but without the hydraulic lift system.  There's a little bit of "heating" from the engine - the fan blows air through the fins and out of the back of the shroud towards the driver - but not a lot.  I wouldn't fancy driving one down there with an open jacket and no gloves!

Update: Some photos from my mate's dad....
 
The first one taken at Antarctic Base "T"
 
 
 
The next two photos were taken in 1959, no location / base has been
given other than in the file names, "along the way" and "running a depot"
 
 
 
 
I will update this posting as soon as any more info comes in .........
I have the last two photos in larger file sizes, it goes without saying
that if you want a copy of these for your records or display info

The scan is taken from a Ransomes advertising brochure. It shows a variety of Ransomes equipment in use around the world, its full title is 'Ransomes 170 years service to world progress'. The brochure does not have a date on it indicating when it was printed, just 'Publication 18349G' and 'AHP.20M.599' along one edge. There is mention of the 1959 World Ploughing Championship being won with a Ransomes plough so it must have been printed in 1959 onwards.
It does look like an MG6 in the scan, that would have been the current model in 1958. It is fitted with the hand lift Ramdozer'.

crawler. You may find the reference number AHP.20M.599 is a printers reference and the .599 is a date code eg Sept 1959, I may be wrong, but similar codes appear on a lot of literature and sometimes it does agree with dates such as 1959 price list for example.

Another group of photos just in this time from Base "D" Hope Bay
known then as the FIDS: Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey.
Proving that there were two crawlers out there .......
They were used to haul stores from the beach to the base and for
setting up depots close to the base for Husky/Sled survey teams.
The survey journeys were sometimes more than 750miles .......
The base was closed in 1964 apparently, clearly they were out there
some time ........
 
 
 
 
These next photos: dead seals, or otherwise known as Husky Food ....
The Ransomes were apparently well suited to this task ....
 
 
Lastly: It would seem that the Ransomes is now stuck in the snow ...
whilst dragging the dead seals .........
 
 
 
So, that's where we're up to so far with info on the Crawlers in Antarctica.
My question would be, what year did Ransomes start producing the MG6?
As these (I'm told) were taken in 1964 ..... the earlier ones in 1959.

Very interesting Trusty Bloke.
I believe that production of the MG6 started in 1953.
The MG in your first set of photos looks to be fitted with spiked pads every other track section while in the latest photos the MGs have their tracks set in the wide position and have swamp pads fitted. Could this be three MGs or have the tracks been altered over time.
None of the MGs shown seem to have any trace of a bulldozer attachment as shown in the Ransomes publicity brochure, I wonder if this machine was on a different expedition?

Alterations: You'll have to ask the MG6 guys on the forum to
see if they can spot anything "odd" in the photos, as this is
not my area of expertise......
I would add though that the hole in the rear upper section
of chassis is interesting as it looks like something is missing
also the "knob" on the right side adj. to the right hand
transmission brake handle ...... non-standard ???

i dont know if any one has spotted that the crawler which got stuck has about 19 pads missing per side as compared with the other has a full set fitted. this is probably why it got stuck as it is putting twice as much weight of machine on snow as the other is lighter because of all pads distrbuting weight are in contact with snow evenly. and halfing its psi factor

If we are thinking about the same hole then I think thats were the optional PTO was fitted. Don't hold me to that, like you I'm not a MG expert (Wouldn't say no to one though Wink )

The hole at the rear is where the PTO shaft would come through. As for the 'knob' on the right side, I'm not sure of its purpose but they are also on my MG6.
Both MGs have been fitted with parking brakes, seen at the bottom of the steering levers. The hand lift floating drawbar has been removed from both machines, including the roller for the chain to pass over. You can see the two uprights behind the seat where it should be.

Have to be careful with the print codes for Ransomes,all their brochures had an ailein print code to any other.The reason was they had their own advertisement department.I cannot remember the chaps name now but in the early 1930's he worked for Ransomes but also had a passion for ametuer photography.Ransomes promoted him to his own department.
So the stories go when he died,the house he lived in,you could only walk sideways through his front hall way for cans of film.Most now are held by the Museum of East Anglican life.Nine are kept by us.Ransomes did many public imformation films,which now a days are the cream of our collecting habits.
The 8mm film that we hold has now been copied onto masters for reproducing CD's,which hopefully will be on sales later this year.As a Hall & Duck Trust,label

This is an excellent series of pictures. Having worked on vehicles in Antarctica for a number of years I have come across few abandoned, a Muskeg for example which I will dig out a picture of is still down there. If anyone seen Secert Life of the Motorway on Beeb 4 12/01/11, there was one(a Muskeg) featured.
Anyway during my time deep south I never came across any photos in the base archives relating to the Ransomes MG in Antarctica so its great that the pictures have surface on this forum. In general vehicles were remove and repatriated back to the UK as they are to this day, but some were lost down crevasses, through the sea ice or just lost due to submergance after a long blow (snow storm).

The knob referred to is a lifting bollard.
The tractor centre of balance is here and when hoisted will hang slightly tail down.  This was used by the water board when lifting machines by crane and probably when unloading from the boat in Antartica.
There was also a bar made which went across the machine between the two holes and had a central ring.  This was also used for lifting but also as a parachute attachment point !   Tractors were supposed to be used in Canada to assist in fighting forest fires but I have never found and photographs of this.
