This is the Barrel I shall be using for this engine. Its got a very small amount of wear front and rear at the very top the the stroke. This will be rectified by fitting an extra piston ring at the skirt of the piston. There are also some very light marks in the barrel. They can be seen on the photo, but are not significant and can be removed with a good hone, along with the tiny amount of wear.

The Piston with its new 4th ring fitted to the piston skirt. This will prevent slap and uneven wear to the barrel.

The cylinder head had a small amount of corrosion around the spark plug, causing a poor seat for the plug. This was rectified by filing flat the surface around the plug.

Have now 'honed' the barrel. These pictures show the 1st to 4th passes.... Almost all the marks have now been removed, there are only a few left, right at the bottom of the stroke. Not too concerned about these as they are so light and can barely feel them.

Have also given up waiting for my brother to make the new cover. Have bitten the bullet and purchased a new one from Standens. Arrived yesterday and taken straight down to the powdercoaters, along with the new wear shoe and the new soil flap. All will return orange and not the horrid Dowdswell green!
Hopefully then I can finish the assembly and it should be all finished!!!

I started the final leg of this restoration today, making a start bolting the last of the bits back together. Its been 2 years since i've seen some of the nuts and bolts and couldn't find the box with them in........ A trip to the local Unimaster to restock all the fixings required. Im sure that box will reappear once i'm finished.
Here's todays progress, got the chain tensioner refitted and chain tensioned, smothered that and both the gears in "Pecker grease" kindly donated by S1G! Fitted the new gasket and refitted the chain cover, wear shoe and support bracket. Unfortunately the "set screws were not salvageable so have decided to use 7/16ths nuts and bolts. I will paint the bolt heads soon....... ![]() |

The colour difference in the above picture is down to using the flash, in daylight the colour is the same!!!

Also got the rotor shield fitted. This is a new one from Standen Engineering as my brother has been very busy at work, unable to make one for me. Refitted the Rotor shaft and the new blades, I know they are still green, they will be painted black too........

Tried to refit the rear shield too, but for some reason its about 3mm too wide to fit between the end plates of the front shield? Have had to take drastic action and remove some of the powder coating and some of the steel to allow it to slot in. Managed to get it on, but tighteneing the bolts, one decided to shear off, and it wasnt even tight. Will have to find the stud extractors to,orrow and remove whats left......

I use Fireblack spray which is used on woodburning stoves, puts a nice mat black finish but if you want to gloss it you can polish it up to a gloss finish.
I just wish I could find the same contacts as Daren has for powder coating.
He is in a class of his own!

Hi Paul, Thanks for the comments, I used a standard can of VHT (very high temperature) paint, available from the local Halfords (motor factors). Its applied to the cold exhaust and left to dry. Once dry I refitted to the engine and started the beast. I left it to run for approximately 10 minutes then allowed to cool, repeat the process a few times to fully cure the paint. Dont allow the exhaust to get too hot as the paint will blister before its had the chance to become fully heat resistant.

Hi Phil, How far from Newbury, Berkshire are you? My powder coater gets jobs from all over the UK, sent in on pallets. He also has guys travelling around the country shot blasting all sorts, google A and C Shotblasting. He is kinda old school too, which means cash is a better deal! nudge, wink....

Such an awesome job, bet it never looked that good out of the factory.
How and what do you paint all the bolt heads with in the end and do you just use black steel bolts? Thanks, Mike

The stuff i used on my allen scythe all lifted, but i just gave it a good run after painting and must have cooked it too fast. I will do as you say next time. Also the stuff i used was all shiny, i didn't like it, i like that matt finish.

Hi Mike, Thanks for the comments, I will hand paint the bolt heads with the same colour paint used on the project. My local supplier mixes up a pot of touch up paint for me.

Todays progress....... Managed to extract the offending sheared bolt, re-tapped the thread and got the rear shield fitted finally! Only to remove it again to paint where the powder coating was removed. Here it is all fitted.

Got the depth foot and support braces refitted, also temporarily fitted the soil flap, but need to buy some threaded bar to mount it properly. Also fitted the split pins to the selector rods. Here it is almost finished.......
