The coil shouldn't be there. It has magneto ignition but sounds like that coil has failed. What engine does it have, spare coils are available. I presume it is a 2 stroke, so probably a Mk25c. The coils for these are avaliable on ebay. You want the long type. Also buy a condenser whilst you're at it, the original will be dead.
The coil and points are accessable under the flywheel. To remove it, undo the centre nut, until it feels tight again, then whack it. Repeat. Before you do that, make a timing mark as these are so and so's to time.
Hope this helps

Right.
From what I can make out, you have one of these under the fuel tank...

If so, remove it, It shouldn't be there.
Can you confirm the engine is the same as this one...
If so, then remove the cowling and the flywheel. Under the flywheel you'll find something that looks like this
Do you have access to a multimeter? If so, set it to the 20k ohms resistance setting and test between the brass tab and the metal poles. Tell me what the reading is, though I suspect you'll need a new one. Also measure, the total length and the length of the main bit.

Hi Kevin

I am doing up a Allen with an 11C engine, see my thread in the projects section http://www.tractorbox.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4180.

Mowersman is right, you will probably need a new coil. Also watch out if you removed the HT connector from the magneto back plate. It is Bakelite so it can be quite brittle.

Also there as a good explanation of a HT magneto ignition system on  http://www.stationary-engine.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11434 (sorry for advertising another forum, but it explains it better than I could).

Ooh dear... It looks like you coil and pole mounts are missing. I may have some spare mounts, I'll need you to take some measurements later...

The motorcycle coil that was mounted under the tank may not be a mistake, the previous owner could have used it with a battery, or he could be substituting the failed windings in the old coil, it is usually the fine wire windings that go, and if so a 6volt coil from a motorbike will work just fine.

Yes, the external coil will work fine, but if I'm not mistaken, it will only cost about 30 to replace the missing bits, so probably worth it.

Ok, It sounds like these are the ones, however, it appears that the coil for this will be very very expensive.

Hi, can you get me the measurement you got for the coil,m length, and pole diameter. I'll check these with my brackets before you buyn them. I don't want anything for them, just the cost of postage.

Who quoted you 60 for one, they should be able to give you the dimensions. The pole diameter is the diameter of the metal core through the middle.

Have you been able to confirm the coil dimensions, I don't want to send the brackets unless they are the right ones.
