The blue Kohler engine on our Howard 350 has finally given up the ghost and the engineer tells me it cannot be repaired. So I have been thinking of buying a replacement engine, perhaps a new Kohler or a Honda, but I am not sure what size of engine I need. Would you know what horsepower the original blue engine had and which replacement engine could you recommend?
Thanks very much.

We have just taken a 16 HP Kohler off of a Gem and that had destroyed the gearbox so be careful not to go to big

I think from memory the offical figure was about 6hp, allthougth the k141 kohler used a different hp ratting to say a briggs. I know of people who fit 5.5 honda gx 160's and are happy, i personally would find another kohler, failing that an ohv kubota/ mag is probably the best engine on the market today.

If it isnt orange it isnt a rotavator

The Kohler K141 T 166cc engine as fitted to the 350 produced 5.3 hp at 3600 revs according to the manual.
I've got the Kubota engine on my later Dowdeswell 352, and a very good engine it is too.

Not much difference but my Howard manual states K141 T 266 5.5hp s.a.e.rating [printed jan 1977] but my Kohler spec sheets state 6.25hp both for the 2"/7/8" bore so take your pick!

Kubota GS200 fitted to my 352 is 5.2 hp accoding to the engine sticker. Looks like anything around 5/6hp would be OK.

have you tried Chester Hudson - http://www.mdr.co.uk/tillerparts/
for parts- having met him he has a lot of parts available for most things- he may have the engine you need- or at least be able to advise a replacement.

A replacement engine will need to have a 1" drive shaft for the Howard clutch to fit

Yep 5-6 HP should do it with 1 inch shaft . If want it to last forever , then a Kohler is probably best  if you can get one . If you just want tuse the machne the the "Chonda " type Chiese copies are OK .  Please note ?USA Horse power out puts were always  different in the past , The reason is  where and how the HP was measured Early Kohlers did have the US HP figures , so seem to be little higher . Now all use the SAE system so there should be no real difference  There is a Kohler on a Auction site at the moment fo 40.00
