    Posted: 21 Aug 2011 at 9:30am
Good morning.

This is my first post on the Forum and hoping it is going to be of a great help when my Grandad finally gets round to restoring his Ransomes MG6 Crawler.

The first major hurdle we need to overcome is finding an alternative to the MG6 Carb.  The current carb had been damaged and over half of it has melted away, i'm guessing due to some sort of fire.

Over the past few years my Grandad has done quite a bit of searching around for a replacement, i have been searching on ebay and the rest of the internet but to no avail.

So my first post on here is to find out whether a different carb can be used in place of the current carb.  Did 'Amal' make a similar carb for a different application that would work.

We are getting pretty desperate as the Crawler is pretty much complete but is taking up needed storage space.  Without a carb it may as well be scrapped!!

Please help!

The carburetor could be one of (I think) three. You could try swapping it for another but all the carbies have different ways of mounting at the engine so this would be relatively difficult. Which carby do you have and how bad is the damage?

Dave,
I presume the carburettor is the 356/1 aluminium type with butterfly throttle as this is the only one I can see  being melted away.
This carburettor was unique to the ransomes and makes them scarce and expensive when they do turn up. The Amal 398 versions can be made to work but are not correct and are also difficult to locate.
I may be able to assist with spare parts to rebuild yours or source the other types.

Lets see if i can get the photos up.

Heres the carb, or at least whats left of it.  I can see it was made by Amal but cannot see any numbers.

Hope this helps.

Yep that was a 356/1 and I doubt any amount of parts will sort it out. Give me a call if you do not have any other luck on here.

If your desperate, there are lots of carbs that could probably be made to fit, until one turns up.

Thanks for the replies, maybe a step closer to getting this thing running!

We are desperate, so if there are lots of other carbs that will possibly fit, can anyone suggest one or 2?

I'll keep an eye out for an Amal 398 and if anyone comes across an alternative, please let me know.

Cheers
