    Posted: 07 Nov 2011 at 11:08am
Hi there

I recently got given a Howard gem by my grandad witch has no spark.
It has a JAP engine on it and a Lucas magneto I was wondering if any one has any info on the mag or why it has no spark?

Will put pics up later

Thanks
Jake

I assume you have removed the spark plug to check for no spark or did you disconnect the lead from the plug and hold it a very small amount away from the cylinder head,if you removed the plug try another one to check if the plug is faulty or not,if still no spark remove the small round cover from the mag behind which you find a set of point's,turn the engine over very slow until the point's open then check the gap 0.015",with feeler gauge's,if no gap re-adjust by slackening off point's retaining screw and opening or closing the gap then re-tighten screw and re-check for a spark if still no good, proceed as follow's open the point's and insert a small piece of folded [so sand is on both side's] fine sandpaper note do not use emery type of paper, let the point's grip the paper and clean the point's by gently sliding the paper back and forth then wipe the point's with a clean piece of cloth and retry to see if you now have a spark when turning the engine over slowly you should hear a click from the mag area that's when you should see a spark at the plug if not then you may need to have someone look at it because it seems as if you may be learner on this type of thing that's not being funny to you as we all had to learn at some point but you may need someone to show you.If you are in Essex them pm me if not then maybe one of the other members would be able to.

There won't be an click as enginear describes with the Lucas mag. I'm afraid to say the Lucas RS1 magneto does have a rather poor record, as the coils tend to break down with age. Also the condensers go. Do you have a multimeter, that would allow you to preform further checks.

Ok, thats had a Lucas SR1 fitted instead of the original Wico A?The black plastic cover comes off to reveal the points and condenser. With these, it is worth replacing the condenser as a service item. Search for a Lucas DCB101C, should be about 4.

hi jake. it could be that the float is sticking at the bottom of chamber. try running again and tickle it constantly, and see if it runs longer.
Not sure whats wrong. i think we will let it develop
