Not far off finnishing my wolesley, but fired the engine up today and lots of oil came out of the breather pipe and filled the carb. any ideas whats happening please

Check the oil level isnt to high, if its right you may have worn/stuck rings. Also make sure that the petrol hasnt syphoded into the oil when stood.
If it isnt orange it isnt a rotavator

Just a thought,

Was the engine running ok before the work commenced?

Has the engine been removed from the mower or the machine tipped on its side for any reason? This could allow oil to enter the breather system.

The suggestion of fuel seeping into the sump is a good one. I have seen it a few times and have heard of others, in the engines that I have seen there was no fault with the float valves. The problem can be overcome by fitting an inline fuel tap part number 698183, available from a Briggs and Strattton dealer.
