Thanks for your quick thoughts! The fact that it is a bit smokey when running does seem to bear out the 'tired' theory. I managed to get a major 'belt' off the plug lead so ignition doesn't seem to be a problem...
I will investigate further..

I would say it is definately the issue , the engine is not turning fast enough for the electronic ignition to work .
