Hi all,
I've just joint the forum whilst searching for some info on a Winget autotruck I recently bought and came across this post
The thing is actually called "The Mechanical Moke" and was made by Winget.
Luckly mine is mostly original and untouched and I'd like to keep it as original as possible. I even have the original type plate for the top and a nice air filter decal.
Now to start my own thread.
I bought it as I saw a few old road working and building machines at the Goodwood Revival last year and thought they'd be fun to have
![]() A man can never have enough toys...
My plan is to restore it and use it at Santa Pod and Avon Park Raceway as a pit truck when my mates and I take our Drag Beetles to the track. To tow the cars, haul tyres etc.
I've got a few metal repairs to do which shouldn't pose a problem at all and then the frame and most loose parts will go to be shot blasted and powder coated. I will do it in Heritage/Leaf Green (RAL6002) which seems a close colour to the original. The pick up bed will be new stained timber boards. The engine is going to need the most attention I think. Its a JAP 4/3 stationary engine.
So far Im mising the correct tank, the valve cover and most importantly the magneto
![]() If anybody has any parts or knows a good source, maybe even another engine for sale, please let me know.
Cheers Frank

Frank It's ex Ransomes Matador , from your point of view cylinder barrel/piston is ok , mag is ok. Carb and manifold would be different from yours , as would crank. Free if you're ever down this way (Norfolk) Andy. |

Could I arrange a courier to collect it, as I'm not likely to get to yours in the near future.
Funny enough I bought the moke from near Woodbridge in Suffolk and then visited some friend near Clacton in Essex.
The company I work for uses UPS, so I could get them to collect it from yours if you don't mind.
I've realised it's not easy to find spares around my neck of the woods.
Frank

Frank , if you let me know exactly which parts you require , I would be prepared to break the engine and post the parts.
Owing to past experiences with couriers , I have next to no faith in you not recieving damaged parts , I trust you understand. Best Andy. |

I'll definetely have the magneto and valve side cover and if you have the cooling shroud and it doesn't need too much work that as well.
I found a brand new one here if not.
The rest all seems there, although the carb etc will need stripping and rebuilding. I don't know what the engine is like yet. It turns over though so that's a good start.
Let me know how much I'll owe you for postage in a PM and I can paypal you the money.
Cheers Frank

I've made some progress on the moke and finished the metal work to the carriage platform and one of the disc wheels.
Although I want to keep as much original metal as possible and think a little rough looking adds to the character, part of the frame was too rusty, so I cut it out and welded new angles to it. Also made new lifting eyes which were missing completely and tabs to fit side panels in. The wheel was a bit more work and I had to cut out one side and make a new disc. I think the result is quite good. Now to the other side. I've also made new rollers to fit in the main frame which the engine swivels on. The old rollers had seized and were just flat on one side. Well it's been a while and the project stalled for quite some time. Setting up my own business and some work at home didn't leave me with lots of spare time.
But yes I have progressed and all parts are now nicely powdercoated and the reassembly has begun. The engine is still part disassembled and will be put back together next with a little rebuild, new gaskets etc. I bought another engine on fleabay for the magneto, tank and valve cover. Really looking forward to getting it done and having a ridearound. Frank |
