Im sure this has been covered before so please feel free to direct me to the right location if it has.
I have 3 fuel caps. the butterfly type , and the throtle lever off my Ransomes that I need to get re chromed. The only place in Ireland has a minimum charge of 100 euro for anything.....
Any body have any advice on chroming? Places in England that do a good job for reasonable money?
Or any general advice on dos and donts and what to look out for in general in relation to chroming....

For items like throttle levers I allways use chrome in a rattle can. If prepped properly it looks almost identical to the real thing.
If it isnt orange it isnt a rotavator

You really need copper first then nickel before a thin layer of chrome. That gives the best finish, the industry devised a way of putting chrome directly on the steel but it was rubbish....

I researched chroming a while back when restoring a classic scooter and it appeared that a number of local firms who used to offer a seasonably priced service were "forced out of the market" by health and safety issues but continued to offer the service by acting as agents for one or two bigger concerns.
Some came clean about it while others pretended that they still did chroming "in house" but the net result was two lots of profit being taken out of the one job plus transport costs etc. Plus the fact that one had no idea where one's, possibly irreplaceable, item was.
A re-chromed headlight rim cost me around 50 at the London Chroming Company and a re-silvered reflector for the same headlight 35 from a more local company, Central Engineering of Hythe. In both cases the results were excellent.  
In both cases new reproduction parts were available at far less cost but experience showed that they "didn't fit where they touched"!

These guys know & understand the importance of unique items!!
Also, wait for it, NEW laws coming in, EU or someone?? so regards chemicals & waste etc, this is only going to lead to fewer specialists about. FBHVC are covering this a bit at the moment.

We have pistons in breakers ground undersize then chrome aliduim deposited on the serface then reground bak to std. 2-300 isn't an uncommon charge for the process.

Can't decide which route to go down . Cost is obviously an issue , while quality cannot be measured in monetary terms. Is a super chrome finish overkill on this project ? Having said that I can see myself in the reflection of the paintwork , so ...... Help !!

I would suggest that 'Buy it Right or Buy it Twice'

If you pay the right firm & relevant costs, then you will have the satisfaction of a quality finish...that will last!
I've worked with Metal Finishers a great deal and take the opinion that it's worth that initially outlay.. you'll look back in years to come... but that's me, it's personal preference IF you can be satisfied that your choice of supplier is the best one.

gareth I also have tried it just to see what the result was like,and strangly enough we had a chromed toilet seat and lid which was slightly worn away and I gave the whole unit a couple of coats and it has certainly given new life and sheen to it .having said this I must warn people that you have to hang onto the bath taps as its very slippy now.
Not sure whats wrong. i think we will let it develop
