Evening all.
Right, question of the day, got the head off to give the valves a tidy up, and there is no head gasket. What sort of thickness would be appropriate? also what material would be best?.

Not familiar with the engine but are you saying that it has been running with no head gasket? If so is the head lapped to the block with just sealant to make the joint?
If it should have a gasket I would use something like 1 or 1.5 mm Klingersil C-4400. Made a head gasket for my compressor from the 1.5 about 25 years ago and it's still going strong.

Thanks for the info. Don't think it has run as such with no gasket. Guy I got it from said it had had a new valve (which it has) but there is no carbon build up, so probably just got put back together and left. According to the manual it should have a gasket, so I'll get some of what you suggested and make a new one.
